Your Home Page–How to Stand Out in a Crowd

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Like meeting someone in person, having a definitive quality helps another remember you better than if you blend in with the rest of the crowd. The same should apply for your website. Given that the home page of a website is the most visited page of 99% of the websites out there, you want to make sure that it makes the best and strongest impression possible.

There are a number of ways you can do that. Start with the design of the page. On average, 4/5 people do not scroll below the bottom-fold of any page. So that means the top half of the page is where you have to make that best first impression. Use this coveted real estate wisely. Designs that are engaging but still follow the basic format tend to be successful. Things to consider:

  • Make sure your business name and company tagline is visible, add a Call to Action (Call Today for your Free Consultation)
  • Make sure your phone number is large and stands out. So many sites out there have their phone number in squint print. How many people are going to get out of a chair to find their glasses to read your number vs. click out of your site and find your competition whose site is easier to read?)
  • Make use of dynamic colors. If you have an established brand, make sure to use those colors but don’t limit yourself. You can use shades of the same color or have multiple colors, insert a textured background, use bold colors to bring out a certain important piece of information and so forth
  • Slide shows of static pictures and/or videos. You are no longer tied into the static 2-dimensional confines of print ads and materials.
  • Make prominent, easy to read statements of why you are unique, the strong points of your business and what makes you stand out over your competition. Don’t forget to have about 300 words of written text on this page–that can be placed in the bottom fold.
  • Social media–engage your audience to “like you” or “follow you”
  • Make it easy for someone to connect with you–phone number, contact box, email, live chat

It’s a lot to consider and takes time getting the first impression right. However, the reward is that you will have a higher rate of conversion. Using a design company that has a proven track record is important. A new or redesigned website can either be an expensive business expense or a wise investment. Most people would prefer their efforts to be the later in hindsight. Visit www.1seo.com  to see our record of success

How to Run a Successful ‘Text to Vote’ Campaign

Monday, August 29th, 2011

You’ve seen American Idol.  You know that more people voted for Carrie Underwood than the most recent presidential election right?  Well, almost…

The point being, that more people are interacting via smartphone based marketing and platforms like text voting campaigns than reading print newspapers and reading books combined.  By the year 2013, an estimated 70% of all cell phone users will own a smartphone.  (38% in May of 2011, growing to over 50% by January 2012.)

To engage a text marketing client or customer you NEED to have a tangible reward for joining your club.  Gone are the days of “For more information, text____” because NOBODY CARES UNLESS THEY ARE RECEIVING SOMETHING TANGIBLE.  (Insert special shout out to Email marketing for ruining the end user experience regarding online marketing here).  The fact is, that email marketing has tainted digital based solicitation to an astonishing >1% open rate.  On the contrary, a text message has over a 97% open rate regardless of who sends it.

Just think to yourself, “Would I opt in or answer the trivia question in fear that I will be spammed for the rest of eternity?”  The jury is out on mobile marketing at the consumer level, and MMA regulations have prevented spamming and not following up with opt out rates for large volume mobile marketers, which is a great thing.  The bottom line is, if you want to grow your campaign, you need to give a reward more than ‘For More Information Text WIN to 73433”.  It shows how little you care about retaining that client’s information.  If you offer something with a tangible reward, like saying “Thanks for entering, to redeem your 15% off coupon, stop by your nearest Joe’s Hardware.” Your results will drive new traffic.

Your results will drive up because people are receiving something of value on the spot, and is a much softer opening to a client relationship.  For more information on mobile marketing and text marketing, visit www.1seomobile.com or follow @1seomatt on twitter.

Why You’re Not on Social Media, and Why You Should Be

Monday, August 29th, 2011

As with any technology, there are always two camps: Those who adopt early and those who adopt late. The early adopters will pay any price, even if it means fewer features, just to be the first one in. The late comers usually wait to see what all the buzz is about, wait for bugs to work their way out, then when they feel it’s time, they jump.

The same goes for the internet. Do you have the newest browser installed? Are you using Chrome, or still using Internet Explorer 6? Are you reading this on a CRT monitor attached to your desktop, or on an iPad?

Here’s another question: Are you posting on Facebook and Twitter?

You may still be one of the holdouts to Social Media. I personally know a few people, even in the SEO community, who don’t use Facebook, for different reasons. Still, when I hear a business owner who doesn’t use Social Media for their business, my jaw hits the floor. You may be asking “why is it a big deal anyway?” or the numerous other questions heard from business owners about “that Twitter thing” or “why do I need that anyway?”

Quick answer: You need it. The problem most business owners have is not knowing how to leverage it and use it properly. Here’s a quick fact – Facebook has surpassed Google for the most traffic on the web, and is growing every day. Phones now come with Facebook buttons built in. It’s now the way people find what they need to find. Friends, businesses, things to do, going on Facebook introduces you to a direct market of potential customers with feedback, reviews and if you can develop it – loyalty.

Think Twitter isn’t for you? Did you have a special sale last week and no one knew about it? Tweet about it! Develop your followers, give them reasons to follow you and you can grab more customers than ever.

Have some great tips and demos for potential customers or clients, but you can’t get in front of every one of them? Put a video on YouTube! Shooting a video and posting it online becomes another way for clients to find you, see what you’re about and bolster your Search Engine Optimization efforts.

Social Media Management and Social Media Optimization is becoming key to reaching the demographics missed in other forms of Internet Marketing, or bolstering the cumulative effort of all your marketing efforts. Using an experienced Social Media Optimization company to manage your efforts opens doors and opportunities you might not have thought about. You can dominate you competition with the right management of your Social Media.

1 Good Reason to Use Facebook for Social Media Optimization

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

The best reason to use Facebook for social media optimization (SMO) is that if you or your business is on Facebook—you exist in the world of social media.  If you or your business is not—you do not exist.

How have I come to this conclusion?

Well, these days, Facebook is a must have for people who want to get involved in social media optimization because it is another simple and effective tool in which you can establish you and your business as a thought leader in your market.

Like many other social media sites, Facebook’s main purpose is to provide its user a platform in which he or she is able to have a presence on the Internet.  Being that Facebook is also a casual place where its users engage with their friends, what better way is there to stimulate awareness about your business then by providing a Facebook profile which would allow users to interact with your business directly?  Inevitably, Facebook  provides an environment where fans and potential customers can discuss your business, thus generating awareness—you exist!!!

Having only a website these days means that you are unable to make the cut of being “social media savvy” (as I’d like to call it) because if you miss out on the chance to interact with your fans (or potential fans) you would miss out on potential business.  Simply put, they will just go to a competitor who is offering them a Facebook account which is in turn a cool, modern, and fun social media site to utilize.

Take it from someone who uses Facebook on a daily basis.  As a Facebook user, I would expect to get in touch with, thus interact with a business in a way that was nearly impossible a decade ago—Facebook provides me a means in which I can immediately engage with the business.  The fact of the matter is, that besides occasionally socializing with my friends for some witty banter here and there; I also use Facebook as a search engine to find information about my favorite celebrities, music artists, sports teams, and local businesses—I want to be aware of who they are, what they think, offer, and have to say.

Ultimately, today’s online consumer has no ultimate loyalty—so they want to see a company who provides them the information they want on an Internet platform that is simple, convenient, and recognizable—in other words, FACEBOOK!  If you are not involved, you should be—Facebook is great for stimulating awareness, and thus works well when it comes starting  or expanding your company’s social media optimization!

Getting the Most Out of Your Keywords—SEO

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Business Owners who want to maximize their SEO investment should take time to review their analytics. Analytics provide a slew of valuable data about the like-ability of your site.  Some key reports that provide insight- keyword traffic, top content, all visitors report, geography reports.

There are 2 key reports that help a business owner and the project manager manage to the data. The Organic Keyword Traffic report will show you if your keyword is successful or not. The lower the bounce rate the better. A bounce rate is when a visitor exits the site in 3-5 seconds. The other important report is the Top Content report. When it comes to your business, you have certain products and services that generate revenue. Typically, strong websites will have pages devoted to these products and/or services. Again, the lower the bounce rate the better.

So what happens if you review your analytics and your bounce rate is high for key pages and/or revenue generating keywords?? Change your messaging on your site. It may be that you need to insert a video, or a photo slideshow, or pull attention to key facets of your business that make you different/better/special…  Tracking your analytics and the data they provide will allow you to maximize your investment with SEO by knowing which keywords and key pages are working and not working for you. Fix what isn’t working and you will continually improve your SEO performance.

User Experience and SEO: Good for Biz-nass

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

When I first started building websites (in high school), user experience was probably close to last on my list of priorities. It was all about aesthetics, and making sure the words were there. My how times have changed…

Maybe it has a lot to do with maturity, or it could be my natural progression towards the inevitable salesman attitude that will surely consume every piece of my personality that used to be there, but the first thing I have to think of before hand hits mouse and color hits monitor, is how the end user will be interacting with this site. I am glad that my mentality has taken this route thinking back on some of the sites I had built in the past, but that was the way things were done.

Today, with Search Engine Optimization in any smart business owner’s marketing tactics, right along side of that is the importance of having a website that will attract your prospective customer, and keep them on the website long enough to become a paying customer.

What can you reevaluate on your website to make the User Experience more effective? You go back to the basics! First, look at your navigation. If a potential client has to click more than once to get to the meat-and-bones of your business, chances are they you may lose the opportunity. If they have to click more than twice, you may as well write that person off as a client for your competitor. Next, you want to look at your color scheme. These are the basics of Graphic Design that I am talking about here, and Marketing 101. If your website is supposed to appeal to an older crowd, and you are using hot neon colors, you may want to rethink your strategy. Finally, it’s picture and video placement. They say a picture is worth 1,000 words. Well, a video is worth about 10,000, since it is statistically shown that videos have a positive impact on the conversion level of a website.

User Experience is an awesome part of my job, because this is ultimately what makes a website work or not work. Subtle differences in color choice and type placement are the ultimate creative challenge, and it keeps me going. Well, that, and about a gallon of coffee.

Why You Need A Good Website For Your Business—Website Design

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Hello All,

Today I’m going to talk about Website Design, and why you need a good website for your business no matter what market you are in. Let me start with a question.

What do you want out of your website?

A common answer from business owners is that they do not need much and only need a small informational about your business.  Well, let me be the first to tell you, you are 100% wrong, save the little bit of money you are looking to invest, and go treat yourself to a nice dinner in the city with your significant other.

This common misconception could not be further from the truth about what you should want out of your website.

Yes, your website should be an informational about your company, but it is also a sales tool and should be treated as such!  The way to do this is to clearly map out on separate pages every single service that you offer.  Clearly explain what you do, and why someone should choose you to do business with.

Your website should be easy to read, easy to navigate, and easy to find.  What I mean by this is:  You can have the greatest website in the world, but since you do not market it by doing a search engine optimization program, no one will ever find it.  Or…Maybe you do SEO, but your website is poorly built and everyone who comes to your website is so unimpressed by it that they bounce right off.  Both of these situations are a recipe for failure.

You need to have your website found on Google and the other major search engines, and you also need it to be well built and user friendly so that it converts into business.

Other than Referrals, there are not better leads than someone who is doing a search for your service in your geographical area of doing business.  Why wouldn’t you want to be represented properly when a prospect is doing a search for a company like yours?

Why You Need Online Reputation Management

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

There’s an old adage from the Retail and Restaurant industries that says, “It takes a lifetime to keep a customer, and one bad experience to lose them.” For the most part, a bad experience would cause the loss of the affected customer, possibly a small group of friends and family due to word of mouth. Rumors then spread damaging the reputation the business worked hard to positively maintain. Most of the time, unless a comment card was left or feedback was immediately given, the business owner was clueless that there was a bad experience, what the bad experience was, and the resulting loss of customers and their business.

When it comes to the Internet, a bad experience hits the web and immediately becomes viewable to thousands or millions of potential clients and customers. With smartphones, a bad review can be posted before someone even leaves an establishment. This could be devastating to any business, but by engaging in Online Reputation Management, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. Online Reputation Management for your business can be the savior you need that makes the difference between happy repeat customers and potential business that looks the other way.

Ignoring a problem doesn’t make it go away, it only makes it worse. There are plenty of examples of businesses of all sizes finding out too late that bad information, rumors or vindictive venting was available for anyone with an internet connection to see. This causes loss of potential business, and in some cases, a business that’s unable to continue due to public perception, (even if it’s false and unfounded.) If you don’t address the problems that your customers have, and that they went out of their way to address, you can be viewed as uncaring, unsympathetic and the perception is that you don’t care about your customers.

Setting up Google alerts is important to get notifications when content becomes available that mentions your company or brand. Once you have information on how to find what’s being said, it’s important to address the questions and concerns that are there. Remember, this isn’t a vendetta in many cases; it’s someone who put good faith into your business and expected a fair return. Don’t engage in a back and forth verbal sparring match, even if you feel you are in the right. Breathe. The goal is to address the concern and try to turn the bad experience into a good one. When handled properly, what was once a lost customer can turn into returning, repeat business, raised customer trust and new business that is now aware your company is active in addressing and resolving issues that come up. If at all possible, it is not out of line once a dispute is settled to request any negative comments be revised to reflect the resolution you’ve may have had.

In review, it’s now become critical for businesses to be proactive and take charge of their Online Reputation Management. Remembering some of the important tasks to manage (tracking what’s being said, setting up alerts, addressing negative reviews, highlighting positive ones, reaching out to the customer to resolve disputes and issues, remaining calm through the entire process) is key to building up a positive shield around your brand and limiting the damages done by negative reviews and ratings.

If your day to day duties prevent you from taking full charge of your online business reputation needs, it’s best to enlist the services of a good Online Reputation Management and Search Engine Optimization company to handle this for you.

Web Development: Sometimes Its Good To Look Back

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

We’re in a pretty amazing time and place right now when it comes to the ever changing technology we use day in–day out. Sometimes you have to just take a step back in awe when looking at how much our technology has grown exponentially—especially in the last 15 years. Everyone loves their iPhone and Android phones.  Why not, they are pretty amazing considering they pack more processing power and better navigation systems than what was used on the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.

Just a few years ago, (say even 5 years ago) Nextel and Moto Razr phones were all the rage. Now we have dual-core processor phones with GPS, facial recognition software, high speed internet, and with storage space that’ll soon rival desktops. Even if you’re a developer, like myself, you have to be amazed at how much we progressed from just a few years ago. Even old school programmers and engineers who work with assembly and machine code have it easier now than they did before. For a time, Java was thought to be the defacto standard for developing cross platform code bases, it has since been surpassed by faster and less resource intensive languages like Python, and the ability to cross compile source code for multiple platforms. Look at video games today, if you were a kid in the late 80′s, early 90′s Super Mario Brothers and The Legend Of Zelda were considered advanced games with high end graphics. Today, we have full open space environments in games that use real world physics and weather patterns.

From Colossus, the first computer built in the 1940′s to break the Nazi enigma code in WWII, to multi-core processing super computers that run our communications backbones today; from 8 track tapes to blu-ray discs, from Atari to X-Box, from telegraphs to landlines to smart phones, from SGML to HTML5, from 8-bit processors to 8 core 64-bit monster processors we’re living in an age where our everyday technologies that make all our lives easier, fun, and able to progress to that next evolutionary step, is expanding and advancing at exponential rates.

5 years from now the iPhone will be considered ancient technology, (if it isn’t already.) You ever watch any of those old episodes of Star Trek with all their gadgets? At the time that was pure science fiction and fantasy, today we actually have those gadgets minus the beaming up thing…. who knows maybe in a few years. When the first locomotive was built scientists actually thought a human traveling at 20 mph would kill us, now a fighter pilot traveling at supersonic speeds is the norm.
