The 3 Most Important Google Analytics Factors

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

In Google analytics, there are certain things that every manager should know and understand when analyzing data for their company:

1.  Bounce Rate:  The bounce rate described as the “rock star” stat in Google Analytics, is something that everyone should know when reading the data.  This stat is the amount of people in percentage format that leave your site within 3-5 seconds.  Described most aptly by Matt Cutts from Google as, “I came, I saw, I threw up.”  Thanks Matt.

2.  The Mobile Traffic:  When looking at your visitors, traffic and content pages, you are going to 100% want to look at your mobile traffic.  This will surprise you, I guarantee.  Even if you have no mobile sense, no mobile phone, and have never been on a mobile browser, an average small to mid-sized business will have between 5-10% of their traffic coming to them via mobile devices.  Now you can check the site from your device and make changes accordingly to give the end user the best experience.

3. Traffic Source %:  Now, in most cases if you have never done SEO before, your primary source of traffic will come from “Direct Traffic.”  This is people that know your name, but not necessarily what you do.  This is not the traffic you want.  You want to have your search engine traffic be well over 50% of your traffic if you are doing SEO, unless you rely heavily on referring sites.

Mobile Websites for Businesses

Friday, February 24th, 2012

As the Internet becomes increasingly central to the daily lives of consumers, the importance of business presence on the Internet and easy accessibility to consumers is becoming increasingly clear to both small and large businesses. The focus on Internet marketing has shifted from being predominantly web-based to include a new focus on mobile websites and applications. Over the past decade there has been a significant growth in the use of mobile devices, and in the past 5 years alone there has been exponential growth in the use of Smartphones. Mobile phones, and now Smartphones have become an integral part of the everyday lives of consumers. Because of this growth, business presence and accessibility on these devices has become essential.

Today, 91.4 million people in the Unites States own a Smartphone and 1/5th of mobile phones in the world are Smartphones. The amount of time users spend on their Smartphones is growing at an impressive rate, and in mid 2011 app use reached 81 minutes per day surpassing web use (which averaged 74 minutes per day.) In addition to an increase in the use of Smartphones, the research company, Informa, predicted that mobile ad revenues will reach $24 billion by the year 2015.

So, with this significant increase in Smartphone and mobile web use, you can see why it is so important for businesses to be equally accessible on the regular web as well as on mobile devices. But to do this, there are a few important factors to keep in mind. One of the most important things being that there is a difference between the design for mobile sites and regular websites – something that many businesses do not realize. The small size of the screen on mobile phones compared to the screen size on a PC makes formatting key to website development. Because of this difference, it is important that business make sure their sites are both search friendly and formatted to work on a PC as well as on mobile devices. It is better to have sites formatted so that when using a mobile device, users do not need to turn their screens or zoom in to navigate the page. Today, consumers often uses mobile phones when on the go to search for restaurants and other places nearby, making it important for mobile sites to be easy to navigate on their mobile devices, and for relevant information such as contact information, products and services, and hours to be on the home screen or somewhere easily accessible. Today, what consumers want is convenience, they want sites to be user friendly and they expect information to be fast and easy to find.

How to Create A Company Page from the Personal/Administrator Profile

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Due to the fact that I have had the pleasure of making Facebook company pages as well as administrator profiles, I have decided to briefly and quickly explain how to create a company page because I get a lot of people asking me how to do this.

You should know that this post covers just the VERY basics on how you can make a company page if you already have a Facebook profile.

After you have made the administrator profile, or if you already have a Facebook account, making a Facebook company page for business is actually quite simple.  There are two ways you can start the process:

Look to the top right of your page and look to the downward facing arrow. Click the arrow, then “Account Settings.”

After you do those actions you will be brought here:

Click the “Create a Page” link to do exactly what it says, “Create a Page.”

Or you can do it this way…

Click the “Pages” tab on the left side of your “Home” page:

You will be brought here, then click “+ Create a Page”

Either way you do it, you will be brought to this screen:

At this point, you will need to pick which category best describes what you are looking to create your page as.  For example, if you are a local business, you would select “Local Business or Place.”

After choosing which is best, you will then be prompted to fill in the appropriate information.  Look at what I did to make a page for 1SEO.com:

After filling in all of the information you would then click the “Get Started” button.  After that, you will be brought to this screen:

All you need to do at this point is enter the content it is asking for, or you can just skip the process altogether and go right to your page.  Either way, after either skipping or filling in the information, your screen will look like this:

Welcome to your page!  From this point on you can enter all the content you want by clicking the “Edit Info” button and doing just that!  Remember, creating your page is not like doing a heart transplant, so don’t get all wound up over what to do and what not to do.  Social media is supposed to be fun!  So, play around with your company page a bit before you start inviting people to “Like It.”  Also, make sure you get a groove on how to handle your page, and fill in whatever information you want to make it the best it can be.

Last but not least… What is that pesky “Get Started” screen all about?

There is nothing you can do about this “Get Started” screen, and don’t worry—your fans will NOT see it.  The Get Started” screen is just Facebook’s way of helping you GET STARTED with your page by offering suggestions on how to make it better.  Ultimately, it will disappear after you post more content, photos, and attain more fans.

Easy enough…

Although brief, I hope this “how to” guide helps!

Cheers :)

Your Reputation Is Important To You And Your Business, So, Why Shouldn’t It Show Online?

Monday, February 20th, 2012

There are three types of reputation management and both are important to your business…

If someone writes a bad review on you or your company, or someone fills out a “rip off report” on you or your company, you could be in for a long hard road of trying to repair you or your company’s online image!

Rip off reports are impossible to get removed. Anyone can fill one out, and the rip off report company will not take it down easily. Their sites are very strong, so when someone types in your name on Google, your rip off report may be the first thing that a potential customer or client may see. To remedy this you can do reverse SEO or reputation management to at least try to bump that rip off report down and get it off of the first page. You can do this by creating different listings to take its place and bump it down.

Make sure that you have good reviews online!

Google places, Yelp, yellowpages.com, superpages.com, and several other referring sites allow you to put up reviews.  Business 101 would tell you to make every customer happy and resolve any issues with customers to ensure that you get good reviews online.  Also, ask your customers who you know (that are satisfied) to write a good online review for your company.  Offer the customer a discount or incentive to do it, and it may make them take the time to do it.  Lastly, should you get a bad review, make sure you respond under it telling your side of the story.  You are not going to please everyone (and some people can be difficult) but if you can follow a few of these guidelines it can make a world of difference online.

When you do a search for your name on Google, Yahoo, and Bing…

Every result on the first page should be your website, your name, and your company. No one else should come back relevant for your name. Now there could be some variance if there is another company out there with the same name as you, but you should make sure you are on every directory possible and have your website coded properly as well to increase your chances of this.

Hope this helps! Call me with any questions!

SEO Trends for 2012

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

You may ask yourself, what is search engine optimization (SEO) and do I really need it? Well in the world of Internet, a website owner aims for one thing and that is to land on the first few pages on the search engines. This is why search engine optimization is crucial when it comes to your business or brand’s rankings. SEO is the technique to improve the ranking of websites. With technology increasing daily and becoming more and more sophisticated, SEO trends are always likely to change. With that being said, it is important to be up-to-date with current SEO trends to keep your website ranked high.

So, if you didn’t have time to keep up with the 2011 trends following are some trends to watch out for in 2012:

Mobile Marketing

More and more people own Smartphones these days, and the iPhone and Android are amongst the top leaders. This results in no longer relying on desktop or laptops for Internet searches, and with that being said, mobile marketing will expand.  Whether it is simply opening a browser on your Smartphone or commanding Siri to do a search it will inevitably become vital for website owners to have a mobile site and possibly an app. If you ask me, mobile searches will conquer our beloved desktop or laptop in the years to come, if they haven’t already.

Social Media

No one can deny the fact that social media has gained a tremendous amount of popularity over the years. Almost every person and business has a Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc. It has become so popular that people almost expect your business to have a social media presence—I know I do! That being said, having social media sites can help bring traffic to your website and increase your business’s SEO performance.

Content

Google released an update about a year ago called Google Panda. The search engine made some changes in the algorithms that determine a site’s page rankings. Needless to say, Google can tell whether your site has been updated, has quality content, and is relevant in the search. Google has forced website owners to update their site because it could possibly affect their rankings if they don’t. So, current and up-to-date content is the way to go in order to give your site that extra boost for possible higher rankings.

With the consistent change in Internet marketing it is important to keep up with current trends when it comes to SEO. Although it is hard to say what changes and algorithms Google will come out with next, it is important to be on your “A” game to decide what strategies are needed in order to have a successful SEO campaign.

3 Reasons Social News Beats the Press on the Clock

Monday, February 13th, 2012

It seems there has been a battle recently between the news media outlets and their digital feeds vs. social media and content spreading organically through its users. Take the Joe Paterno passing for instance…now we will never know officially when he passed, but it seemed social media was the place to watch during the “speculation” of his death.

1. Timing – Now in some cases (as we have seen) there can be hoaxes, misinformation, and people trying to start rumors, but when you start to see content going viral, you can almost suspect something is going on.  We have the most recent weekend story of Whitney Houston whose death was leaked on social media an entire 27 minutes before the national press—which in news time, is an eternity!  The reasons that people want to be the “source” for news on the Internet is that it heightens their credibility and brings traffic to their website.  It is much easier to be an inside source to one person and Tweet about it, than to be an outsider trying to get that piece of news.

2. Publicity – Everyone wants to be the originator of viral content.  If there is a way to spread a story socially (and actually be correct as it carries throughout the web) your credibility will grow and there is a sense of self-fulfillment and celebrity attained that most people crave. There is a constant battle to be the person that leaks the most current news in the social game and the competition gets more intense every day.

3. Flexibility – When you think social, you think nimble, pliable, and transparent.  When you think news publications, you think next day. This is why the flexibility of social news is so important, and it is CONSTANT. Your news feed is never going to “stop” updating people’s stories, and never going to “stop” sending you updates. How many times can you think of where you saw something cool on TV or heard about something in the news and HAD to be the first to Tweet about it??  I can count two for myself already this morning.

The bottom line is that Social News is becoming more trusted, and we have seen this in recent unfortunate events—proving again that organic content wins on the Internet.

Marketers New Playground: Pinterest

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

It has not even been two years since it was launched and Pinterest is already on the top ten social networks list. Think of all the social networks you belong to, whether it may be Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc….they all seem to have one thing in common when they start, a free service that seems to have no intention to gain profit. Sooner or later, they gain recognition and it becomes a playground for marketing and advertising.

Deciding whether or not your business should become involved with this new social network is the question. Currently, Pinterest offers an array of categories such as home décor, recipes, wedding ideas, quotes, graphics, products, technology, fashion, and more. If you don’t see your business’s target market in any of these categories I wouldn’t run just yet. With its increasing progress and potential I believe Pinterest will be a great way for businesses to create brand awareness and bring traffic to their sites. Having a presence in the latest social media trends is important for reaching an audience. Especially with increasing users it is crucial to get ahead of the learning curve when it comes to your business on social networks.

Whether it is a service or product, establishing it and your business and starting a following is the first way to gain recognition. You do not want to have blatant advertising for your products and services—this is a big turn off.  For example, if I were an interior decorator I would pin some home décor that I like. Say it is a picture of a remodeled fireplace…I’d link the picture to my blog with other designs I have created, or work that I’ve done. This allows users on Pinterest too not only discover things you like, but the work you do. Pinterest can be like a gateway to your other sites that people will start to travel through and flow through more often, thus resulting in more traffic.

So, if your business is yet to be on Pinterest there are a few advantages that may get you to reconsider. One is that it can bring more traffic to your site by posting links in the titles and descriptions of your posts. Two, gaining a significant amount of exposure can build your brand and introduce new customers to your site. Raising awareness is ultimately a great marketing tool that can benefit your business (this can also allow your business to show a little bit of its personality.) Users want to know there are real people behind the business operations you do, and seeing more personable pins could help gain more followers and customers!

While Pinterest is still in the works, it is growing at an alarming rate in the social media world. Whatever your purpose or cause may be, why not take advantage of this free marketing tool to help your business become successful!

1SEO.com Ranked #1 for Best Integrated Search (SEO & PPC) in the Country for February 2012 by TopSEOS

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

On Wednesday February 1st 2012, Top SEOS, the Independent Authority on Search Vendors, released their February 2012 report on the Best Integrated Search (SEO & PPC) companies awarding 1SEO.com with the very coveted #1 spot.  Ranking #1 amidst the top 30 SEO companies in the country, Lance Bachmann, founder and President of 1SEO.com, considers it to be a spectacular achievement.

Based in Levittown, PA, and founded back in 2009 by presenting local and national companies with provisions into online marketing by using Google, Bing, and Yahoo; 1SEO.com is a company that is actively involved in providing services such as search engine optimization (SEO), pay per click management (PPC), web design, web development, and social media optimization.  In regards to their search engine optimization, 1SEO.com uniquely tailors each client’s campaign to meet the needs of the client’s goals.  Since the company’s start they have realized that no one SEO strategy can generate success for every SEO campaign that is thrown their way—customization of the client’s campaign always reaps the most success and the highest ROI for each client.

Along with providing effective custom SEO services, PPC, and many others, 1SEO.com also makes the use of skilled and trained professionals who can manage a significant amount of operations in a timely and effective manner.  In other words, they are the best at what they do.  As Bachmann said it on the video played at the 2012 Philadelphia SmartCEO Future 50 Awards Gala held on January 13, 2012 in Drexel Hill, PA, “I believe that bringing in the talent first is important for the growth of any business.”  Bachmann’s 1SEO.com was a winner in SmartCEO’s “Emerging Growth Category.”  The SmartCEO Future 50 Awards Gala celebrates the Philadelphia area’s 50 fastest growing companies based on employee and revenue growth over the past three years.

Apart from winning the SmartCEO and TopSEOs awards in January and February, 1SEO.com still manages to steadily maintain their client retention rate of 90%!  One can probably say that bigger things are still sure to come for 1SEO.com!

3 Things To Consider When Building A Mobile Website

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Being one of 1SEO.com’s resident code geeks, I owe it to myself and my reputation to keep abreast of trends in the Internet marketing game. One surprising statistic that was recently released is the growth in mobile search. Mobile search of course leads to mobile web browsing. While most websites look absolutely fine in a standard smart phone browser, it is absolutely to your benefit to also build and launch a mobile version of your website for the best end user experience.

What Are The Keys To A Good Mobile Website?

1. Easy and bold navigation. In a traditional website, horizontal navigation is the winning solution here, but that may not necessarily translate well in a mobile environment. Big buttons or bold bars are the way to go when it comes to a mobile website. Remember, you have about 3.5 inches diagonally to work with, so make it count!

2. Simple color scheme. Following the same rule of thumb with the size of the media, you do not want to overwhelm the end user. Keep the graphics simple and eye catching.

3. Calls to action, my long standing favorite. As you may recall from my last post, Design, Implement, ACTION!, I touched on the importance of making the end user react to your site the way you want them to. The same principles apply here…keep the phone number large (and clickable!), make sure your buttons are large (relative to screen size of course) and evenly spaced, and be direct!

Remember, this is a mobile world and people are moving faster than their 4G cell phones can handle. You want to make sure you streamline your information here, and deliver your sales message home and as quickly and effectively as possible.
