You’re Probably Not Reading This Unless…

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

Is the only content you are reading on social platforms? Well, of course this blog will be published on all of our social platforms here at 1SEO, but is that the only way content is getting read these days?

According to the DigiDay article called “Agencies Ditch Blogs,” social media will conquer blogs. “With the rise of social media, businesses are blogging less. That goes for agencies, too, which are increasingly turning their backs on their blogs in favor of platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and newer kids on the block like Instagram and Pinterest.” The article went on to quote Sam Weston (director of communications at digital marketing agency, Huge): “Nobody reads agency blogs, and there are so many out there it’s impossible for people to keep up anyway. We put ours on hiatus while we figure out what we want to do with it. We do use Facebook and Twitter. We’ve figured out what works for us there.”

There is a reason agency blogs are read, because they are producing great content that people want to read. There are blogs out there that get an astronomical amount of attention, so before we say blogging has lost to social media, think again. However, I won’t argue that there is tons of content that may not be worthy of reading at all and that’s fine, but blogging can benefit businesses in ways that Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn cannot.

If you are a frequent blogger you may ask yourself why are you even blogging? Well unlike social media, it is your own private space that no other person or business can have authority over. So the content you write or feedback that is posted is all in your control. Pretty powerful huh?

Another beneficial reason for blogging is its good for search engine optimization. This is the type of content search engines are looking for, which can be rewarded with improved rankings. Since blogs are and should be frequently updated, they tend to get crawled by search engines more quickly. Not only can it enhance your rankings but it can also build an online community. This can be good for business, add a personal touch to your company, and allow users to see you are human.

While all these may seem like great ideas to get back out there and produce fresh content, think of why you are really writing. Most people write because they want to be heard, have an opinion or have something to say, right? You want people to believe that you are truly invested in the industry or topic. People don’t want to read the same topics that can be found on every other blog similar to yours. So, what sets you a part from the rest? This will not only differentiate you from your competitors but create strong loyal readers as well.

Reevaluate why you came to the blogging world to begin with. It’s not about just getting fresh content out there or to create a following. It is much more than meets the eye. Connect with others who are just as passionate about your industry or topic, and hopefully that will trigger why you got into blogging in the first place. All the rest will fall into place, such as increased rankings, attract potential clients, and building a following. These things although may be done on social platforms, they lack in being able to build a web presence, and create visible links with other networks. So, don’t trash the blog just yet, it can be more useful than you think.

2 Tips On How To Not Commit Copyright Infringement When It Comes To Blogging

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Once upon a time the Internet was an all out free-for-all.  People were copying each other’s written content and blogs without feeling any remorse.  It also didn’t matter who wrote it, photographed it, drew it, people could and just would steal things (and often still do.)  Ever have your content stolen and see it on someone else’s website?  How did you feel?  Probably heated and aggravated with a strong desire to cuss out the website owner!

These days, plagiarism and copyright infringement committed on the Internet is a big issue.  Not only can you confront the offender who stole your content via a DMCA takedown notice, but the offending website could be penalized by Google, seriously damaging its search engine rankingsA website can even go so far as being banned from the search results because of the duplicated content!

Wondering if your content has ever been stolen?  Google Copyscape.  Ultimately, Copyscape is your ideal online plagiarism detective and will help you find out if someone has stolen your content.

Worried that you may have committed Internet plagiarism or copyright infringement?

Well, knowing what copyright is will help you realize just how serious a crime it may be if you have committed copyright infringement.  According to Wikipedia.org’s definition of copyright, “Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time. Generally, it is ‘the right to copy,’ but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other related rights.”  Wikipedia defines it perfectly and nearly flawlessly because it informs the reader that if he or she copies someone else’s work, he or she may end up having some serious legal issues.

To stay clear of encountering any copyright issues while you’re writing a blog or content for a website, you can follow these two tips:

1. NEVER just do the old copy and paste!

When it comes to blogging and content writing you should want to build your own reputation as an expert within your field.  How would you be able to educate yourself if you just copy and paste the information onto your website or blog?  Of course you should read the original blog or article, but you should also be digesting the information and be able to formulate your own opinions, thoughts, or experiences in response to the topic.  Also, copying and pasting another blog into your own blog will bring forth copyright issues.  If the original author sees your post they can file a DMCA takedown notice.  Imagine what receiving one of those would be like?  How would that affect your reputation as being a trusted source of information and expert within your field?  Inevitably, please just don’t be lazy, think about what you are doing (writing) before you do it.

2. Cite or link back to the work you used if you want to include it in your blog or article, especially if it is word for word.

Giving the original author some credit by providing a link back to his or her original article will often excuse you from committing copyright infringement.  However, citing another work also means that you should be offering your opinion or thoughts on what the original author had to say.  When it all comes down to it (again) you should not be taking the easy way out, in other words, just don’t be lazy!  No one wants to end up being the idiot when they were trying to be the expert!

Marketing Blues Got You Down? Increase Your Communication!

Monday, April 9th, 2012

The biggest challenge online marketers have when reaching out to people is turning followers into customers, expanding a network, and getting those potential prospects into sealing the deal. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are a lot more, especially with social media taking off as a whole new playing field for digital marketing, (but we won’t get into all of them.) We must concentrate on the 53% of active social networkers that already follow brands. With that being said, the customers are clearly out there, it’s just a matter of interacting and engaging with them.

First thing to look at is if whether or not people are commenting on your blogs. If your posts are “hearing crickets” than its time to figure out why there is no traffic. Evaluate your content. Is it being too broad? Too narrow? These are things to consider fixing in order to address your target audience properly. A simple addition at the end of your blog could do the trick, asking questions may encourage readers to interact. Also, don’t be afraid to promote your blog on every web channel that you have, leaving your followers and readers no choice but to notice your new posts.

A crucial part in becoming more interactive with your viewers is to entice conversation. If you are constantly self promoting, people will be inclined to tune you out. If readers are not engaging on their own try sharing their content in good faith or mentioning them in a post.

Lastly, are you wondering why no one is visiting your site? Check your bounce rate, if it is extremely high this could mean you have some tweaking to do. You may rank well, but if people don’t stay on your page then you may not have what they are looking for. So, make sure your content is relevant and being optimized for search engines, there is no doubt this will increase your visibility in search inquiries. Another helpful tip would be to research your top competitors sites to see what they are doing.

Before investing time and effort into increasing your communication and interaction with potential customers, figure out where your target audience is residing. What websites do they visit, social or otherwise, and distribute your content there. By identifying these key places, you will be able to increase your exposure, target the correct audience, and engage with your readers. And remember; spend as much time monitoring activity as you do sharing the content!

What We Can Learn From The “King” of Blogging

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Who comes to mind when you think of the beginning craze of blogging? Would it be Mario Lavandeira? Better known as Perez Hilton… ring a bell yet? He started out blogging as a hobby, (just like everybody in the late 90’s, early 2000 era) writing online as if it were a journal or a diary. Although, he wanted to set himself apart from the rest and have interesting topics that were highly entertaining. What’s more entertaining than celebrity gossip? He certainly hit the bullseye becoming “Hollywood’s Most-Hated Website.” So, how is it that we can learn something from Perez Hilton, considering he had “8.82 million page views in a 24 hour period” in 2007, which is still up for debate.

Well, for starters viewers came to his site/blog because the content was interesting. Being a marketer you know that content is the most important factor in any businesses success. Therefore, your most precious asset would be your blog; it is a low cost alternative to having a web presence. For small business owners, this is the perfect route to make your business known on the Internet, especially if you do not have the time or the funds to learn HTML or hire a developer.

A business blog gives you the chance to share your area of expertise to a target market. As for Perez Hilton’s, his target audience was anyone who read celebrity gossip or news, which is a huge target audience. But for small businesses you should not restrict your blog to a too narrow audience, this will make it more difficult to grow and gain readers.

Are you passionate about your business? Ever hear the saying do something you love, and never work a day in your life? Well blogging should be exactly that, find a topic you are enthusiastic about and your content should come easy. Also, don’t forget all the readily available media vehicles you have at your fingertips. There are endless amounts of social media platforms you can expand on to build a consistent empire across all grounds.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with your blogging content. If something doesn’t work and its not bringing in the traffic you were looking for, scratch it and start fresh. No one wants to read lame content that won’t be remembered, or share worthy for that matter. So, stand above the rest, if someone hates you then you are doing your job right.  No one ever got to the top by being a people pleaser. Pick what works for you, work on it, and the results will follow.

Plagiarism and the Internet—Have You Scraped Anything?

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

This may come as a shock to you, (or may not) but the Internet is full of websites that have been plagiarized.  Don’t want to hear more, stop reading…chances—are—you—could—be—guilty—of—plagiarism—in the past!  ; )

First, what is plagiarism?

Well, Wikipedia.org describes it as being defined asin dictionaries as the ‘wrongful appropriation,’ ‘close imitation,’ or ‘purloining and publication’ of another author’s ‘language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions,’ and the representation of them as one’s own original work.”  Even though that definition defines plagiarism quite accurately, it could also be problematic because many writers and authors often look to previous works for “inspiration.”  Therefore, in my eyes, literally copying someone else’s work word-for-word or picture-for-picture is plagiarism—just complete authorial fraud and dishonesty.  The only way I wouldn’t classify someone as plagiarizing (when it comes to written content) is by the author “citing” any original sources in the article, blog, or book etc. that he or she wrote.  Inevitably, the content should also be 70% new/writer, and 30% sources—at least that is what I walked away with from college (as far as I can remember.)

Who cares about what we learned in college about plagiarism, that was school—we aren’t in it anymore!  Those rules don’t have to apply to Internet copywriting!?!

Oh—just stop!  You should care!  Internet plagiarism is an epidemic, and it is a shame that so many thousands—if not millions of websites have duplicated content on them—and shockingly, many of them get away with it!  Also, Internet plagiarism does not only refer to plagiarizing a website’s written content, but pictures, photos, graphics, logos, videos, and more.  The most common form of plagiarism an Internet user sees is undoubtedly the written content on a website, and the majority of the time, he or she doesn’t even notice!

How do people steal content on the Internet you ask, and why don’t we notice?

Many human “scrapers” (as they are called on the Internet because they figuratively scrape, or literally just steal information) copy written content of other websites related to the business they are writing for, and paste it on a document to use as the written content for the new site they are creating (one can just assume that a scraper is a plagiarizer!)  Most people fail to notice because there are just  too many websites out there all talking about the same thing.

So, how do you or someone plagiarizing and scraping affect Internet marketing in regards to SEO, and how could you stop it?

Well, if you’re scraping content for your clients, you should consider stopping; and if you’re committing Internet plagiarism, you should stop as well.  Google hates duplicate content, and if you are a true SEO content strategist or copywriter, you should know better than to just do the old copy and paste from another website!  Google may also have no idea who was the original author of the content if it notices, and your/your clients’ rankings and traffic may tumble and crumble because of the duplicate content.  Also, just imagine if you got caught!?!   No one wants to deal with an icky DMCA takedown!

Unfortunately, there is no sure-fire way to stop or protect against Internet plagiarism and scraping.  There are always going to be those who want to take the easy way out, get websites live quickly, know how to manipulate the search engines, and frankly, just don’t care about whether or not they are stealing content because they aren’t savvy on the subject matter.  Unfortunately, if there is a back road to anything—including stealing written content, the majority of people will go that way, because people are just not “all-knowing,” and it’s easier to steal it rather than take the time to think about and create new content. :-/

So, what can you take away from this blog and my ramblings about plagiarism?  An awareness…well, I’ll also leave that up to you to decide, but at least don’t forget what I said about it in regards to SEO

Or, just ask yourself…

What if you worked hard on a blog, it’s published on your website, and someone else steals your content, how would you feel?

Regardless of whether or not you have plagiarized or scraped something in the past, chances are, not good.

SEO Trends for 2012

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

You may ask yourself, what is search engine optimization (SEO) and do I really need it? Well in the world of Internet, a website owner aims for one thing and that is to land on the first few pages on the search engines. This is why search engine optimization is crucial when it comes to your business or brand’s rankings. SEO is the technique to improve the ranking of websites. With technology increasing daily and becoming more and more sophisticated, SEO trends are always likely to change. With that being said, it is important to be up-to-date with current SEO trends to keep your website ranked high.

So, if you didn’t have time to keep up with the 2011 trends following are some trends to watch out for in 2012:

Mobile Marketing

More and more people own Smartphones these days, and the iPhone and Android are amongst the top leaders. This results in no longer relying on desktop or laptops for Internet searches, and with that being said, mobile marketing will expand.  Whether it is simply opening a browser on your Smartphone or commanding Siri to do a search it will inevitably become vital for website owners to have a mobile site and possibly an app. If you ask me, mobile searches will conquer our beloved desktop or laptop in the years to come, if they haven’t already.

Social Media

No one can deny the fact that social media has gained a tremendous amount of popularity over the years. Almost every person and business has a Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc. It has become so popular that people almost expect your business to have a social media presence—I know I do! That being said, having social media sites can help bring traffic to your website and increase your business’s SEO performance.

Content

Google released an update about a year ago called Google Panda. The search engine made some changes in the algorithms that determine a site’s page rankings. Needless to say, Google can tell whether your site has been updated, has quality content, and is relevant in the search. Google has forced website owners to update their site because it could possibly affect their rankings if they don’t. So, current and up-to-date content is the way to go in order to give your site that extra boost for possible higher rankings.

With the consistent change in Internet marketing it is important to keep up with current trends when it comes to SEO. Although it is hard to say what changes and algorithms Google will come out with next, it is important to be on your “A” game to decide what strategies are needed in order to have a successful SEO campaign.

SEO Content Writing—How To Create Quality Content For Better SEO

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

The basic concept of SEO is having the resource (content) that attracts links.  However, just knowing this concept is simply not enough to increase your rankings on the search engines—you must know how to write content successfully and how it can attract links to your website.  This also means that you must know the simple mechanics behind writing a good piece of content as you weave any targeted keywords into your prose. Therefore, if you do not at least produce sound and quality writing, not even the search engines will take notice, so in other words—learn how to write, and make yourself good at it!  You want to be the main attraction!

So, you want to know how to write great content?  Considering these five factors will definitely help you to produce just that!

When it comes down to SEO content writing, your prose must target the specific keywords you chose, and you must put the best emphasis you can, on those keywords.  Also, your content must be link worthy (well-written) and written in such a way that it will be intriguing to your audience.

There is no doubt that considering each of these five factors for better SEO content writing will produce one monumental headache for any individual.  As covering all of these factors is quite time consuming to dissect and explain (and can make for one very long blog) this particular piece will briefly discuss the following topics associated with how you can write better content such as:

  1. How You Can Make Your Content More Link Worthy
  2. How You Should Structure Your Content
  3. How To Make Your Content Relevant And Unique

Inevitably, you are not going to be able to do everything listed in this article, so don’t succumb to writer’s block immediately, try to apply any tips I provide only when it is feasibly possible.  Although…considering all of these factors will produce something great for your SEO campaign—no doubt!  : )

Making Your Content More Link Worthy

You can make your content more link worthy by:

  1. Having your content or article appear as a useful resource, for example, “how to” guide, tips, what is…people like to read about and see how they can have their problems solved.  So, inevitably, link worthy content is content created with a focus on how to help people out.
  2. Being the bearer of breaking news (bad or good in your particular area) will always give your content a chance to go viral—fresh content for the search engines!
  3. Having a thoroughly researched blog and article.  If there are areas within your industry that have not been thoroughly investigated (recently) then look into them more deeply.  Most of the time, having a well-researched blog or article will drive a bigger audience to your site.

On Structuring Your Content…

The Shorter The Paragraphs The Better – Your content structure needs to make reading it bearable, so creating shorter paragraphs can do just that.  Therefore, even though you may feel the need to go on and on, you should keep your paragraphs short, concise, and to the point.

Images – Incorporating some images can break up and explain your content better to the reader, but don’t overdo it!

Always Check Your Spelling And Grammar – Even though you may not have studied English grammar and writing in school, you should try keeping things as grammatically accurate as possible.  Readers may forgive some errors, but a lot of mistakes can turn a reader off and have them questioning your credibility as a reliable source of information.

Make Your Prose Flow – In other words, provide a natural flow within your content to reach a satisfying conclusion.  Jumping around makes for difficult reading and most readers will be left thinking “How did she/he come to that conclusion?  Do I really have to read that again?!  What?”

In all, please make sure that you organize your content and that it is edited.

Making Your Content Relevant and Unique

Tip #1:

When it comes to article or blog writing, don’t copy the original content (source) word for word.  Yes, you can “cite” the original article and sentences used in the article, but also make sure to add your own thoughts and opinions pertaining to the topic the original author addressed. (Should be 70% you, and 30% source when writing a scholarly article or essay.)

Tip #2:

Value Your Opinion – If you are working in and studying a certain area repetitively you obviously must have some sort of knowledge in the area… So, be confident, strive to voice your opinion on the topic you are writing about.  No matter what, there are always going to be people who disagree with what you have to say.

Tip #3:

Reach for the creative writer in you to create new and thought-provoking content – Just because someone has already published something about the topic, it doesn’t make them right.  Ask yourself these questions when trying to come up with a new article or blog… “Have they done enough research?  Are they right or wrong?”  Come up with something completely original—that’s the fun in being in author!

So, now you have an idea of how to be a better SEO content writer…do it.

Want to write fresh content to help your company’s SEO campaign?  Get to it, and try to implement any writing tips I provided in this article as best you can!  Just simply try…

“The two most engaging powers of an author are to make new things familiar, and familiar things new.”  -Groucho Marx

1 Reason Why Content Is King, Even On Facebook

Monday, December 12th, 2011

The key to bringing traffic to your website will always be content.  Why?  Because Google will always love fresh content, and display those websites that have it, higher in the search results.

Therefore, think about how your Facebook fan page (which is linked to your main website—and if it isn’t, you definitely should do that ASAP) can help you achieve higher search results for your business.

Think about this:  If you are already blogging on your website to produce fresh content for the search engines, you should go to your company Facebook profile and post your blog as a status.  Why should you do this?  Not only will Facebook provide backlinks to your website because of the blog, but if your blog post is engaging, insightful, and helpful to all of your fans, your fans will share your post on their page (for their friends to see) and in turn you will have more people aware of what your business has to offer.  After all, the reasons you should be utilizing Facebook are because you want to connect with your audience, attain “likes” for your business, and also get new business by the sharing of content and any sort of helpful information you can offer.  So, for those reasons, content is king on Facebook.

Don’t Have A Blog?

For those of you who do not have a blog on your website but desire to publish content on your company’s Facebook profile, there are still other ways in which you can generate content to post on Facebook.  For example, showcase your work!  When you display what you do through pictures, videos, as well as testimonials, you provide solid examples of work to show your potential fans and clients.  Apart from blogging, displaying the face of your business and what you have to offer allows potential customers to realize why they should engage with you in the first place—you are a transparent company, and you care about your customers!

So remember, CONTENT (in any form) WILL ALWAYS BE KING!

Good content will equal a good following!

Simple Steps And Fixes For Your Website That Will Help Your SEO Strategy

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Well folks it is Black Friday and instead of shopping with the crazies at the stores for good deals, I am eating leftovers and writing a blog that I know will help your SEO Strategy.

FYI:  I will be taking advantage of the sales on Cyber Monday instead of going out on Black Friday!  Dahhhh, I’m a “web guy!”

Simple Steps And Fixes For Your Website That Will Help Your SEO Strategy:

1.  Make sure your page/menu tabs are clear and understandable.  What I mean is:

-Easy to navigate with relevant pages and drop downs in your menus

-Your main services or products are visible when someone comes to your site, no sense doing SEO for keywords if people do not see them when they get to your site.

-Have good content on your pages so that the spiders can read them helping you become more relevant for keywords, and your content should do the selling for you.

2.  Make sure your website loads fast and is the same on all browsers.

-Your images should all load and show up quickly so that visitors are not waiting for them to appear

-Make sure your hosting your website on a good quality server, use a dedicated server if you have to.

-Static pages are much better to be SEO’d and load faster

-Follow all necessary javascript guidelines to ensure the best results

3.  Have a good website tracking tool embedded into your website so that you can keep track of everyone that visits your website and what they do when they get there.  This will be used as business intelligent:  It will tell you what keywords are working for you, and can tell you if you need to make changes to your website to make it convert better.  Google Analytics is a good and easy tool.

Here Are Some Things You Should Know Inside And Out For Your Website:

-Overall bounce rate

-Bounce rate for all keywords that are not related to your business name:  Example:   “Joe’s Plumbing” – Bounce Rate 75%          “Plumbers in Philadelphia”  – Bounce Rate 42%   (know the difference)

-Average time on site (it is good to know how much time people are spending on your site.  The more the better!

-Page Views (it is important to know the average page views that a visitor goes to when they come to your website)

-Overall visits and unique visitors (and compare from month to month to see progress)

-% of traffic:  Direct Traffic, Referring Sites, and Search Engines   (Track this to know how your visitors got to your site)

-Monitor your keywords very closely (see what keywords people are coming to your site for, if your SEO is working, or if your keywords are converting or failing)

-If you are doing pay per click you should know your Average Cost of Click and your Click Through rate.  This will let you know if you are running an effective pay per click campaign.  Then monitor it further through your tracking system.

4.  You must have a site map on your website and it must be submitted to the search engines, this will help the search engines understand all of the information that you offer on your website.

5.  Have a blog set up in your website with an RSS feed link, as well as links to all of your social media profiles.  A blog is very important for your website because pumping your website with fresh content helps your website get cached, making your website more relevant to the search engines.  You can then link your blog up to your Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn feed giving your website and the information you post even more visibility.

Call us today, and we can help you with all of this and then start an effective SEO program for you so that you can generate business from online!

Reasons Why It Is Important To Have A Content Writer

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

The significance of having pertinent and quality content should not be forgotten when it comes to being involved with Internet Marketing.

If you are, or are going to be involved in Internet Marketing, it is vital that you realize the significance of having superior content on your website.

Why?

Inevitably, having extraordinary content written by a professional and educated writer is what will enable your website to attain better rankings in the search engines.  Also, well-written content will be picked up quickly by the search engine spiders and will spread like wildfire in the social media world, attract links from other websites, and will most of all, drive your rankings up in Google!

Also…

Formulating a successful and compelling message in your content in conjunction with an aesthetically pleasing and well-organized website sometimes means that you need to hire a content writer (or a team of them) especially if you have a lot of content that needs to be written and do not have the time to write it all.

So, what should you look for when hiring a content writer?

  1. A person who is educated in the written word
  2. A person who is creative and can match a voice and business style in any content he or she writes
  3. A person who can write text that flows and is able to maintain consistency throughout a website, article, blog, etc

Why hire a content writer when doing Internet Marketing or SEO?

While the days of appealing to the search engines by fluffing up the content with keywords are long gone, you should still make certain that your keywords appear a few times inside the body of any written content.  Therefore, don’t let content hold up the launch of your website, hire a good writer who is capable of weaving keywords into your content successfully, and above all, is able to produce something readable!

So, if having quality content means success, don’t forget to hire someone who can produce just that—a content writer!
